Chinese Restaurant Style Beef and Broccoli
By Sammi Brondo — July 29, 2024
This Chinese Restaurant Style Beef & Broccoli is almost too easy to make. And, it seriously tastes like takeout from a Chinese restaurant. Only 30 minutes and a few simple ingredients stand between you and this delish meal.
Ever since I made Crispy Orange Tofu, I’ve loved the idea of making my own spin on usual Chinese restaurant style meals at home. I only recently started cooking with more meat, so any meal that gives a fun new way to make red meat is a win with me.
Honestly, this recipe is so easy that I feel badly even calling it a recipe! As you know, I’m all about cooking hacks that make cooking as quick and easy as possible. There are probably a lot of ways to make this recipe more involved, but if you’re also looking to save time (and not looking to go on Top Chef any time soon), you’ll look this recipe.
Pair with fluffy brown rice or brown rice noodles to make it a complete and balanced meal. It’s an easy way to get protein, veggies, carbs and healthy fats in a delicious way. I use short grain brown rice – it always turns out super fluffy.
Notes
- This recipe uses store-bought teriyaki sauce. I like this one, any will do! Choose the one you like best.
- If you’d prefer to make your own teriyaki sauce, that works too! Mix together: 1 cup of water, 1/4 cup soy sauce, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 2 tablespoons cornstarch and garlic to your liking.
- If you don’t have cornstarch on hand, it’s not an absolute must. I really like coating the beef with it because it helps to thicken the sauce and adds a crisp, velvety texture to the beef. That said, this recipe will still work if you skip it.
- I don’t add any herbs, spices (or even salt and pepper) to this recipe, because I found teriyaki sauce to be so flavorful on its own. Obviously, if you feel like it needs a little more, try adding salt, pepper, garlic power or ground ginger.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
Ingredients
- 1 head broccoli
- 1/2 yellow onion
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 lb beef
- 3 tablespoons olive oil divided
- 3/4 cup teriyaki sauce
Instructions
- Chop broccoli into small florets. And slice onion into thin slices. Set aside.
- Chop beef into 1-inch cubes. In a large bowl, mix cornstarch with 3 tablespoons of water. Add beef to the bowl and mix until pieces are evenly coated.
- Add 2 tablespoons olive oil to a large pan over medium high heat. Add beef and cook, stirring occasionally, until almost cooked through, but not fully cooked yet. Remove beef from the pan and set aside.
- Add remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil to the pan. Add sliced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes, until soft. Add broccoli to the pan and cook for 5 more minutes, until soft.
- Add teriyaki sauce to the pan and return beef to the pan. Mix well to combine. Let simmer for about 5-10 minutes, until everything is evenly coated and sauce has thickened. Serve with brown rice.
