Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Bananas: Make sure these are super ripe! The riper they are, the sweeter your Banana Chocolate Chip Oaties will be. I like to freeze bananas when they’re really ripe if I have no use for them at the moment. That way, I usually have a stash of ripe bananas ready in my freezer. Peel them, slice them, and stick them in a Ziploc bag. Just defrost before cooking.
  • Oats: Use quick cooking or instant oats. Steel cut oats will not work in this Banana Chocolate Chip Oaties recipe.
  • Chocolate chips: Opt for semi-sweet regular or mini chocolate chips.

Healthy Banana Chocolate Chip Oaties Tips and Variations

  • Mix ins: Try adding some peanut butter to the mix and/or add a dash of vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt for a little extra flavor. You can also add other mix ins like walnuts or chopped peanuts.
  • Bananas: If your bananas aren’t ripe yet, try placing them on a baking sheet and baking at 350 F for about 10-15 minutes. The bananas will be black on the outside, but perfectly ripe and ready for baking.
  • Cooking tips: The batter will be very wet. Use a tablespoon to tightly pack each one. Put it on the lined baking sheet and use the back side of the tablespoon to gently press the oatie together and round out the edges.
  • Storage: Store prepared oaties in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. You can also store these Banana Chocolate Chip Oaties freeze them for up to 3 months. I’ve heard from many people that they love these as postpartum meal prep!

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick-cooking or instant oats work best because they absorb the banana and help the oaties hold together. Old-fashioned oats will give them a chewier, more textured consistency. Avoid steel-cut oats, as they won’t work well in this recipe.

Yes! Let them cool completely, then store them in an airtight container or freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature or warm them briefly before eating. Many people love making these ahead of time and freezing them for postpartum meal prep!

The batter is naturally very wet, so make sure to tightly pack each scoop and gently shape it before baking. Using very ripe, well-mashed bananas also helps everything stick together.

Absolutely. Try adding chopped walnuts, peanuts, peanut butter, or a little vanilla extract. You can also swap the semi-sweet chocolate chips for dark or milk chocolate chips.

Bake the oaties at 350°F for about 20 minutes, or until they’re set and lightly golden. Keep in mind that baking time can vary depending on your oven, the size of your oaties, and how ripe your bananas are. Some readers find theirs are ready a little sooner, so I recommend checking them around 15 minutes and adding more time as needed.

  1. I’ve made them several times and love them! This time, I didn’t want to turn on the oven, I microwaved them on a plate in batches for 2 minutes, perfect! Took to work and received tons of compliments

  2. These are wonderful! My changes: add a little salt, chopped walnuts and about 1T chia seeds. A half cup of chocolate chips is a lot, a little less is better. I bake them in a mini muffin pan for a nice shape. I let them sit a few minutes before baking so the chia and oats can soak up some of the moisture from the bananas which makes for a more cohesive oatie.

  3. I tried this recipe for the first time & it was really lacking something. Tasted like I just added the ingredients & didn’t bake them at all but I did at the temp & time shown. They were awful & I will not be using this recipe again.

  4. 5 stars
We loved this, I added walnuts and pecans, 3 chopped dates and some coconut flakes. My chocolate chips were sugarfree with stevia. These were the bomb! Thanks for an easy and great recipe for ripe bananas.
