I used to make these Banana Chocolate Chip Oaties allll the time, and somehow, totally forgot about them. It wasn’t until I had a few extra ripe bananas on hand that I remembered to make them again… and now they’ll definitely be added frequently to my rotation.
They have only 3 main ingredients and make a perfect make-ahead breakfast or snack. Did I mention that they’re almost too easy to make?!
This recipe is so easy that it can barely even be called a recipe. You just mix mashed, ripe bananas, oats and chocolate chips together and then bake them. That’s it! Just 3 main ingredients.
If you’re feeling a little fancy (read: feel like taking an extra .5 seconds), you can also add cinnamon and vanilla extract to make these taste even better.
Grab 1 for a snack or even for dessert – I promise, they will not disappoint.
I’ve been having a few Banana Chocolate Chip Oaties for an afternoon snack with a little bit of peanut butter all this week. It tastes SO good and most importantly, actually keeps me full until dinner. It’s a great thing to keep on hand for the week.

Ingredients You’ll Need
- Bananas: Make sure these are super ripe! The riper they are, the sweeter your Banana Chocolate Chip Oaties will be. I like to freeze bananas when they’re really ripe if I have no use for them at the moment. That way, I usually have a stash of ripe bananas ready in my freezer. Peel them, slice them, and stick them in a Ziploc bag. Just defrost before cooking.
- Oats: Use quick cooking or instant oats. Steel cut oats will not work in this Banana Chocolate Chip Oaties recipe.
- Chocolate chips: Opt for semi-sweet regular or mini chocolate chips.
Chocolate Chip Banana Oaties Tips and Variations
- Mix ins: Try adding some peanut butter to the mix and/or add a dash of vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt for a little extra flavor. You can also add other mix ins like walnuts or chopped peanuts.
- Bananas: If your bananas aren’t ripe yet, try placing them on a baking sheet and baking at 350 F for about 10-15 minutes. The bananas will be black on the outside, but perfectly ripe and ready for baking.
- Cooking tips: The batter will be very wet. Use a tablespoon to tightly pack each one. Put it on the lined baking sheet and use the back side of the tablespoon to gently press the oatie together and round out the edges.
- Storage: Store prepared oaties in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. You can also store these Banana Chocolate Chip Oaties freeze them for up to 3 months. I’ve heard from many people that they love these as postpartum meal prep!

Super easy to make and they make the house smell great. I wanted to use up two ripe bananas without the hassle of a 15-ingredient banana bread recipe and major clean up.
I accidentally used old-fashioned rolled oats instead of instant but I let the batter rest 10-15 minutes which helped them soften and absorb moisture. I will use instant next time!
Hello, is it possible to use rice flakes instead of oat flakes?
I think 20 minutes may not be sufficient. They come out a little too soft. I’ll do 25 next time. And next time I will add the vanilla!
Delightful!
So easy and delicious
My apologies for my previous comment; you did specify quick oats in the NOTES, but not in the recipe itself. (If you “Jump” to the recipe, you miss the notes.) These truly are delicious. I used old-fashioned oats, added about 1-2 Ts of milk and let it sit for about 20-30 minutes. ( got only 13 from the recipe. (Next time I’ll probably double the recipe and use mini-chips. (Guittard chocolate makes these irresistable.) I baked for 23 minutes, but it might have been better to let them go to 25. Nevertheless, it’s tempting to eat them all.
So delicious! Quick and easy, a great healthy treat.
So happy to hear you loved them Ashley!
I just made these the other day and honestly they taste great and are a lovely treat especially when I need an energy boost!
